Mr. Carlos

International IB PYP Educator · PYPX Leader · Educational Consultant

An international educator with over eight years of experience, specializing in student agency, inquiry-based learning, and the IB PYP framework.

My teaching philosophy is grounded in hands-on, transdisciplinary learning, where students are encouraged to think critically, collaborate meaningfully, and develop both academic and socio-emotional skills. I aim to create classrooms that are safe, engaging, and driven by curiosity, reflection, and purpose.

MY STORY

My journey as an educator has taken me from Spain to Ireland, Kosovo, and the United States, shaping the way I understand learning, student agency, and international education. With over eight years of teaching experience, I have grown professionally by working across different cultures, school systems, and educational philosophies.

A key turning point in my career came during my years in Kosovo. After my first experience at the American School of Kosovo, I spent three formative years with International Learning Group (ILG), where I truly immersed myself in the IB philosophy. Working in a small, highly professional international school allowed me to deeply understand inquiry-based learning, fall in love with the PYP and the PYP Exhibition, and embrace student agency as the foundation of meaningful education.

I am currently based in Austin, Texas, where I work as an IB PYP teacher, consolidating my experience and continuing to grow as an educator. Alongside my classroom practice, I develop personal projects such as Space PYP Teacher, International Teacher Pathways, and RONIN, through which I reflect on teaching, support other educators, and explore new ways of learning and professional growth.

Sport, travel, and continuous learning play a central role in my life and teaching philosophy. I believe education should empower students, honor their voice, and help them build the skills and mindset needed to thrive in a complex and changing world.

My Journey

1
I am from Vigo, in Galicia, a place that will always be home. Galicia is where my roots are, where my family and lifelong friends are, and where my sense of identity was shaped. I love my land, its culture, and its traditions. Simple moments like eating pulpo together, spending time at Nerga beach with my family, or reconnecting with friends remind me who I am and where I come from. Even though my life has taken me across different countries and continents, Galicia is always present in every step I take. It grounds me, inspires me, and keeps me connected to what truly matters.
2
Norway was my first experience living abroad, and the place where everything truly began. During my Erasmus in Kristiansand, I started to shift my path, moving from simply studying education to building the mindset of an international educator. Living in Norway helped me develop a strong international mindset and a deeper understanding of education beyond my own system. I also had the opportunity to complete teaching practice at Torridal Skole, where I was introduced to the Norwegian education system, an experience that would strongly influence my future as a teacher. This stage marked the moment when my curiosity turned into purpose and my international journey truly started.
3
Mexico was the place where what started in Norway truly took shape. During my exchange in Mérida, the international mindset I had begun to develop became something deeper and more personal. It was there that I unconsciously made the decision to embrace a life shaped by movement, travel, and stories. Stories built through encounters with people from different countries, cultures, and ways of seeing the world. Living in Mexico taught me that learning does not only happen in classrooms, but also through human connections, shared experiences, and everyday interactions. This stage helped me understand education as a global, human experience and confirmed that my path would be built through the world and the people I meet along the way.
4
Switzerland marked my first serious working experience. I worked in a car garage, cleaning vehicles and supporting the workshop on a daily basis. It was a true reality check and a powerful learning experience. I understood that life is demanding, that growth requires effort, and that professional development only comes through discipline, responsibility, and hard work. This stage helped me connect personal growth with purpose and shaped the way I value commitment and resilience in my professional life.
5
Ireland (2017 – 2020) was my first experience working abroad as an educator. It was where I discovered play-based learning and developed a deep understanding of child development and early learning stages. During this time, I also began building strong classroom management skills and learned the importance of nurturing curiosity from the very beginning.
6
My journey in Kosovo (2020 – 2024) began with one year at the American School of Kosovo, which marked my first immersion in an international school environment. I later spent three formative years working at The International Learning Group Schol(ILG). It was during this stage that I truly immersed myself in the IB philosophy, fell in love with the PYP and the PYP Exhibition, and began to deeply understand inquiry-based learning. Working in a small, highly professional international school allowed me to fully embrace the concept of student agency as the heart of meaningful education and shaped the way I understand teaching and learning today.
7
I am currently based in Austin, Texas, where I work as an IB PYP educator. This stage represents the consolidation of my IB practice and experience. Here, I am not only refining my teaching, but also developing my own personal and professional projects as an international educator.
