🧰 The Materials Manager: small job, big responsibility
One of the most important classroom jobs in our room is the Materials Manager.
It is a rotating role that changes every two weeks, and students absolutely love it. Children love responsibility and feeling that the class cannot function without their contribution.
The Materials Manager is in charge of:
📦 Returning materials that end up in the lost and found box to their owners
🗂️ Putting back into the supply closet any materials that do not have a name tag and do not belong to anyone in the class
🔐 Being the only student allowed to open the supply closet and manage shared resources
There is also a second layer of responsibility.
Whenever a student loses a pencil or needs a new material, the Materials Manager:
✏️ Gives them a replacement
📝 Records the date, the item, and the name of the student in a log
This helps us see:
Who is using materials responsibly
Who often loses items
How we can support better self-management
For students, it feels important and grown up.
For the class, it builds an ecosystem where routines are student led and the room stays organized, while I simply supervise and guide.
Agency is not only about big projects or presentations.
Sometimes it starts with a key, a notebook, and the trust to manage the tools we all share.
